MARRIAGE: R-74 victory is bittersweet

I want to thank all the voters here in Washington who supported marriage equality. Words can’t express the gratitude my family and I feel. We are cautiously optimistic that when all the votes are counted, the current lead for approval of Referendum 74 will be sustained, or even surpassed.

Of course, we are elated to know that long-standing discrimination against one minority group will finally be ended: that now gay men and lesbians may have their loving, committed relationships legally recognized and protected; that now they may finally enjoy the same marriage rights that we extend to everyone else, including convicted felons, wife-beaters, child-abusers, and strangers who run off to Vegas to get married one day and divorced the next.

But to me, the victory is bittersweet in that the rights of a minority group are being decided by a majority vote. I believe author Ayn Rand reflected the intent of our founding fathers when she said, “The political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities.”

While we have yet to inhabit the perfect union our founders envisioned, it is still gratifying to know that we can call ourselves on our transgressions and attempt to correct them. And so, again and with a most grateful heart, I thank you for voting for equality!

And to those who opposed R-74, I offer you this: Be not afraid – in time, you will see that the end of marriage discrimination has brought no harm to you, to your marriage or to your children.
